Riding the rapids: one year on

It’s an anniversary like no other for a year like no other. If this had been a scenario in one of my futures workshops two years ago, I suspect we might all have thought it fanciful and overly apocalyptic!

Like everyone I spent much of yesterday reflecting on what I have been through personally, and what we have been through collectively. Throughout the year we have seen a kaleidoscope of human characteristics and behaviours, from bravery and courage to hubris and exploitation. Moments of joy and inspiration as well as points of disbelief and despair. It has without a doubt been exhausting.

The fundamentals of society have been challenged and we have seen inequalities highlighted in a way I haven’t experienced before. We have seen people step up and we have seen those in power fail us.

I want to acknowledge the loss, trauma and pain experienced by so many. I also want to recognise the resilience, adaptability, fortitude, and sheer bloody mindedness that has got us this far. I am positive about the future but I am also fearful. We have learnt a great deal in the last 12 months let’s not see it go to waste.

We shall serve more by listening than by speaking, more by fostering deep reflection and dialogue than by advising, planning, and implementing. (Roger Harrison, 1995, Consultant’s Journey)
