Writing women back into the history of science
The inspiring story of historian Margaret Rossiter and her work in telling the hidden history of the contribution of women to science.
It is important to note early that women’s historically subordinate ‘place’ in science (and thus their invisibility to even experienced historians of science) was not a coincidence and was not due to any lack of merit on their part. It was due to the camouflage intentionally placed over their presence in science.
Multi-cultural teams
New research out from the CIPD looking at the opportunities and challenges of multi-cultural teams in the UK, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific.
Multicultural teams require patience and openness to be effective. Make sure you foster patience and openness by:
- being sensitive to demographic differences, values, attitudes, and experiences
- encourage employees to get to know each other on a personal and professional level
- suspend your judgement about others until you’ve gathered enough information
- avoid a blanket approach to managing different people
- treat people in a way that caters to their unique, individual needs.
Create an empowered organisation using participatory governance
Thought provoking article about a different way of making decisions and empowering everyone in organisations.
Participatory governance provides the opportunity for people to participate in directing, steering, and shaping the organization…[It] is empowerment in its truest form. It enables the use of collective intelligence and continuous adaptation and enables leadership at every level.
Board Guidance on Risk Appetite
Interesting tool to help governing bodies to think about risk. It encourages awareness in terms of risk appetite and risk tolerance.
Risk appetite, defined as ‘the amount and type of risk that an organisation is prepared to pursue, retain or take’ in pursuit of its strategic objectives, is key to achieving effective risk management.
Joining Unlimited: Shame free ease of expression
A beautiful blog piece by Toni Adebajo who has joined Unlimited as programme support. It gives a glimpse into being a new team member and it really made me ponder how many other organisations would prompt a similar response. We should all strive for shame-free ease of expression.
Happy World Collage Day: 6th May 2021
Wow, hard to believe it’s been a year since the last one and what a year! Lots of fantastic artists involved and events happening tomorrow. Do join in if you can. If you’re not sure what to do try 5 minute collages. Start with a small piece of paper of card (postcard size), collect a few bits and pieces, set a timer for five minutes and off you go! Stop when the time goes off. I find this a great way to get going and you don’t have to worry about the end result. Let the pieces tell you where they want to go. Enjoy!
