Audience engagement re-invented
For over forty years Clean Break has been using theatre to highlight the injustices and damage done to women by the criminal justice system. Their latest play – Typical Girls – is on at the Crucible. As part of the production they have developed a fabulous self-care guide that should be a model for others.

Onion Collective – the next economy in action
The Onion Collective was formed as a CIC in 2013 to tackle social, cultural and environmental injustice in Watchet. They have just opened a community arts centre called East Quay. Susan found their story, which she first read in the FT, really inspiring.

Women in the Workplace 2021
This is a summary of the 2021 McKinsey/LeanIn report on women in the workplace. Although based on the experience of American women the themes feel just as relevant here.
A year and a half into the COVID-19 pandemic, women … are even more burned out than they were last year—and increasingly more so than men. Despite this, women leaders are stepping up to support employee well-being and diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, but that work is not getting recognized… There is also a disconnect between companies’ growing commitment to racial equity and the lack of improvement we see in the day-to-day experiences of women of color…. Companies need to take bold steps to address burnout. They need to recognize and reward the women leaders who are driving progress. And they need to do the deep cultural work required to create a workplace where all women feel valued.
Gender Inequality in Deliberation: Unpacking the Black Box of Interaction
A long and thorough research paper but there are some real nuggets if you stick with it. The number of women in a group and its ground rules have a real impact on whether their voices are heard. In short, it’s not enough to merely have women present in a group. If you think this is not an issue in our sector ask women about their experiences.
